Our Farmers

Johan Leenders constantly monitors his chickens

As in many other sectors, the broiler sector is increasingly deploying modern technologies. For example, the use of cameras and sensors in barns helps farmers to optimise the care of their chickens. This benefits the health and wellbeing of the animals. The same applies to Johan Leenders’ farm, where he and his mother keep free-range chickens.
“For example, it allows me to see whether my chickens are active and well distributed throughout the barn. By logging into the computer, I can also check whether they are eating and drinking enough and that it is not too hot or too cold in the barn. I can then make immediate adjustments if necessary, for example by providing extra ventilation or heating. This is a new development which makes both me and the chickens happy, it means we don’t need to open the doors so often and this has reduced the risk of introducing diseases from outside. Despite this, I now see my chickens more often than before…”
But Johan also grants you a look inside the barn. For example, he regularly contributes to reports about his company for television programmes. Johan also frequently posts new videos from the barn on his Facebook page.

“For example, it allows me to see on my phone whether my chickens are active and well distributed throughout the barn. By logging into the computer, I can also check whether they are eating and drinking enough and that it is not too hot or too cold in the barn.”
